These pictures are from the Dorchester North Burying Ground, one of the oldest burying grounds in Boston. The earliest known grave dates to 1638. The Capen Path sign probably dates to the renovation of the burying ground in the 1830s under the supervision of Samuel Downer, a Dorchester resident and noted horticulturalist. The Capen family was among the first settlers of Dorchester and the c. 1638 Capen House still stands in Milton, after having been moved from Dorchester. Downer also helped with the creation of the Mount Auburn Cemetery. Other burying grounds in the Boston area were renovated in the 1830s, including the Granary Burying Ground downtown, where a granite Egyptian Revival gate was installed. In the early 20th century, Dorchester North also received an Egyptian Revival gate.
