The City Record and Boston News-Letter is visiting San Francisco this week and we have been busy exploring one of our favorite cities. The San Francisco Maritime Museum is located at the end of the Powell-Hyde cable car line and is housed in a 1939 Streamline Moderne building constructed by the Works Progress Museum. The lowest level of the museum served as a bathhouse and opens onto the Aquatic Park. The main room in the interior has murals by Hilaire Hiler depicting the story of the Lost Continent of Atlantis. The permanent exhibits include a history of steamships, including a model of the largest steamship ever built, the Great Eastern. The second floor has models and fragments of ships, several of which have connections to Bostonor were built in the East Boston shipyards. Best of all, the museum is free and has knowledgeable guides.
