I've written previously about how much I like signs as part of the cityscape and the opening of this Cary Grant film from 1936 has great shots of what I believe to be Piccadilly Circus as well as other on location shots of London throughout the movie. With the recent call to take down the Citgo sign, I'd like people to think about how much signs contribute to cities. Feel free to leave a comment about your favorite signs from around the world and enjoy the movie!
[Technical note: I was also testing out the Google Video feature which allows a user to directly post a video to their blog. It worked as planned.]
I thought that was a clip not the whole film. Cool.
The Citgo sign has nothing to do with Venezuela. It does not make a poliltical statement. It evokes memories of games at Fenway; drunken nights on a friend's rooftop in college; getting lost in Boston and driving toward it's flashing Beacon and safety.
There is a flying eagle neon sign outside of the Budweiser brewery (across from Newark Airport) in Newark NJ that I have always been fascinated by. Growing up I could see it from my bedroom window (along with the flames from the cracking towers along the NJ Turnpike). Whenever I saw it, I was home.

I did not know about the removal threat to the Citgo sign. I am amazed that Boston would consider this removal, but promotes the addition of aesthetically questionable street furniture like the kiosks on the streets below this neighborhood and city symbol.
