In March of 2005, I wrote a post called Boston Population 2004 in which I suggested that "My guess is that Boston's population has increased slightly since then [the 2000 U.S. Census] based mostly on my own perceptions, nothing more." Needless to say, I was a little embarrassed (because I like to think of myself as a keen observer of the urban scene) to have to write in March 2006 that Boston's population had in fact declined, according to U.S. Census estimates. Well, as it turns out, my first impressions were correct and Boston has actually gained population since 2000, a small increase of about 7500 people as opposed to the loss of 30,000 which was originally announced by the Census Bureau. The new estimate population of Boston? 596,638 people.
