First Parish Church in Dorchester, Unitarian Universalist, where I serve as church historian, is the subject of a Boston Globe article today on the challenges facing congregations looking to preserve and restore their steeples and buildings. I would like to invite all the readers of the City Record and Boston News-Letter to stop by First Parish next weekend, October 21-22, to see the church and visit Dorchester Open Studios. In addition, the Dorchester Historical Society will be hosting the opening reception for Open Studios (full disclosure: I'm a board member of the DHS) on Friday night, October 20 from 6:00 to 8:30. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet Dorchester artists and visit the 1806 William Clapp House. I will be at both events--email me if you'd like a tour of First Parish during Open Studio hours (12 P.M. to 5 P.M., I believe) and I will try to be there to show you the historic building and the Fifield Room, which has First Parish's exhibtion of Dorchester history. If you would like information about how you can contribute to the preservation of First Parish's steeple you can email me as well.
Look for a post soon about the time and date of the steeple removal--it will be quite a sight!
